FAQ
The following questions and answers were gathered from multiple online resources. We wanted to to provide our readers an all-in-one place to research flooring underlayments.
My subfloor is somewhat rough and uneven, will this pergo underlayment help with this?
The surface of any subfloor must be flat, smooth, and dry.
How good is this product for smoothing out imperfections in a concrete basement floor?
The FloorMate underlayment can smooth out minor imperfections. However, read the installation guide and pay special attention to the sections about concrete subfloors. The following is information about smoothing out the subfloor: Check the floor for flatness. If the concrete or terrazzo subfloor has excessive voids or variations, a leveling compound can be used to bring it up to specifications. (See Subfloor Requirements/General.) Low areas greater than 3⁄16″ in a 10′ radius should be filled in using a Portland cement and latex-based floor leveler. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for mixing the filler, and be sure to allow it to dry completely. High spots or ridges above 3 ⁄16″ within a 10′ radius (or 1⁄16 of an inch within a 3 foot radius) must be
ground down. Also please make sure you perform a moisture test and use a vapor barrier if installing over concrete. These instructions are included in the installation guide as well.
How thick is the vapor barrier?
The FloorMate underlayment is 3mm thick.
Can I still use this for Pergo flooring that does not have the attached pad?
The Pergo FloorMate can be used with Pergo laminate flooring with or without an attached pad.
Is this a good choice for basement concrete floors?
Pergo can be used in basement with concrete floors as long as there are no sump pumps or floor drains.
Can you use other laminate over this underlayment or does it have to be Pergo?
Pergo FloorMate is the perfect companion for your new floating laminate or engineered wood floors.
Does it matter which direction FloorMate is laid in relation to laminate floor?
The instructions for Pergo FloorMate do state to ensure that the underlayment seams run
perpendicular to the flooring seams.
Can you use 2 layers of the product under Pergo laminate floors?
Do not recommend you use 2 layers of FloorMate under your laminate flooring. For planks without attached underlayment, install over a single layer of underlayment appropriate for laminate floors, such as FloorMate. For planks with attached underlayment, it is acceptable to install Pergo FloorMate underlayment prior to flooring installation if desired. Make sure to follow the Pergo FloorMate installation instructions, taking special care to seal all foam edges with sealing tape and repair all rips and perforations in the underlayment vapor barrier prior to flooring installation. A separate vapor barrier should not be used in conjunction with Pergo FloorMate as a vapor barrier is already a part of this underlayment.
